Diablos Stun Cowboys 10-9 In Ten Innings
It really was a tale of two different ball games with a surprise ending thrown in as Douglas controlled the first four innings and the Cowboys dominated the fifth through eighth innings.
The Diablos scored in the first on an error and a single. They scored in the second on a single, a home run, another single and a triple. They scored two more runs in the third on three singles and added their seventh run in the fourth on a single and a double. Through four innings the Diablo starter, Manuel Soliman, had held the Cowboys to one hit while walking three.
In the fifth Billy Crowe was hit by a pitch to lead off. Andrew Shoemaker, in on relief of starter Anthony Figliolia, moved Crowe to second with a single. John Hotta walked to load the bases. After Casanova Donaldson and Austin Prott struck out, Brian Millimen singled to drive in Crowe and Shoemaker.
Andrew Shoemaker did an excellent job in his four innings of relief holding the Diablos to just one run on three hits and not giving up a walk.
The Cowboys tied the game at 7 in the seventh. Andrew Shoemaker led off with a single, John Hotta struck out and pinch hitter Anthony Renteria singled putting runners at the corners with one out. Austin Prott, who extended his hitting streak to eleven games, followed with an RBI single. Brian Millimen struck out but Tyler Heck drew the two out base on balls to load the bases. Matt Henrickson then waited out a walk to drive in Renteria. With the bases still full of Cowboys, Riley Smith tripled off the wall to clear the bases and knot the score at 7.
Alpine went ahead for the first time in the top of the eighth as Shoemaker was hit by a pitch and John Hotta sacrificed him to second. Shoemaker moved to third on a ground out by Anthony Renteria and scored on a single by Austin Prott.
The Cowboys added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Matt Henrickson doubled and scored on a single by Billy Crowe.
Douglas tied the score in the bottom of the ninth. The way they scored the two runs to tie is the thing. Andrew Shoemaker had retired nine Diablos in a row. David Gates, the newest addition to the Cowboy's roster, set down the Diablos 1-2-3 in the eighth on very few pitches in his only inning pitched. Coach Stevens brought in Ryan Rogers to pitch the ninth. Rogers walked the first two batters he faced and a passed ball put both of those runners in scoring position with no outs. Jean Batista grounded out to second to score one run. Corben Green then drew the third walk in four batters. Pinch hitter Yuki Yasuda then singled to tie the game in regulation.
The Cowboys went quietly in the top of the tenth.
The Diablos faced the fifth pitcher of the evening for the Cowboys as Mike Straub replaced Ryan Rogers in the 10th. Straub gave up a walk, a double and walked a second batter to load the bases for the Diablo lead off man, Leandro Mateo. Mateo came through with the walk off single and the Cowboys lost 10-9.
I mentioned the walks because for the first eight innings the Cowboy pitchers did not allow a walk and the relievers in the 9th and 10th walked 5 of the 10 batters they faced. Mike Straub took the loss for the Cowboys who fell to 8-3 on the young season. Andrew Shoemaker's excellent job in relief was wasted. Shoemaker also went 2 for 2 and scored three runs.
David Gates shut down the Diablos on three ground outs and threw very few pitches. As the newest Cowboy, who hadn't pitched in the series, I have to wonder why Coach Stevens didn't have him back out for the ninth.
Coach Steven's responded to my query saying, "David Gates is not our closer, Ryan Rogers is." Thanks Coach.
The Cowboys lost their first extra inning game of the year. Both teams scored 6 of their first seven runs with two outs. The Cowboys left 8 men on base and struck out 12 times. These were swinging strikeouts. The Cowboys have struck out 30 times in the last three games against the Diablos.
The Cowboys went 3-2 in this series against the Diablos and now take on the Bisbee Blue in a three game set
