Cowboys Drop Opener to Bisbee Blue 4-3

W.D. Barr

The Alpine Cowboys played their sixth straight game against the two Arizona Pecos League teams in Bisbee Arizona but this one was against the Bisbee Blue and the result was a 4-3 loss.

Although Brett Kennedy pitched a very good game after he settled down from a rough start, he gave up three runs in the first two innings and took the loss. In the first inning Kennedy walked the lead off batter and Alex Heumann, the Blue center fielder, singled. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Two consecutive ground outs to second scored Perrone and Heumann.

Kennedy didn't do himself any favors in the second as he threw wildly to first on a grounder by Bisbee third baseman Kasey Lewandowski that allowed Lewandowski to reach third. He scored when Blue catcher Jonathan Zalud followed with a single. Scotty Hong pitched the seventh and eighth in relief of Kennedy and surrendered the fourth run on a base on balls and a double by Zalud.

The Cowboy bats were held in check as the Alpine hitters struck out thirteen times against Blue starter Ryan Dylan and reliever Mike Heller. That makes 43 strikeouts in the last four games for the Cowboys. Alpine also left thirteen men on base. Austin Prott's hitting streak ended at 11 games as he went 0 for 4 on the night. Anthony Renteria went 2 for 4 and Matt Henrickson was 3 for 5 for the Cowboys.

The Cowboys scored a run in the sixth as Anthony Renteria reached on an error and moved to second on a fielders choice by Austin Prott. Brian Millimen was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. A double by Matt Henrickson scored Renteria.

Alpine scored two more in the top of the ninth when Tyler Heck was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Renteria. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Heck and Renteria scored when Brian Millimen singled. Matt Henrickson singled to put runners at first and third with two outs and the score 4-3 but Corey Caswell struck out to end the game.

Alpine fell to 8-4 on the season and Bisbee climbed to 6-4. The Cowboys will face the Blue twice more before returning home to face the White Sands Pupfish on Tuesday the 27th of May at 7 PM.
