Cowboys Split Doubleheader with Pupfish

The Cowboys split a double header on Thursday, losing the opener 8-3 and bouncing back in the nightcap with an 8-0 win.

White Sands scored first in the opener when Nate Enriquez singled, stole second, advanced to third on a Will Miller ground out and scored on a wild pitch. The Pupfish would score another run in the second when Preston Lyon led off with a solo round tripper to make the score Pupfish 2, Cowboys 0.

The Cowboys scored a lone run in their half of the second as Riley Smith singled, stole second and raced home on a single by Billy Crowe.

The Pupfish would plate two more in the fourth. Tommy Fleckenstein drew the one out walk and moved to third on a single by Aaron Olivas. Joe McCarthy reached on an error by the Cowboy third baseman as Fleckenstein and Olivas scored. McCarthy was thrown out trying to steal and Nate Enriquez flied out to center to end the inning.

White Sands scored two more in the fifth on a single, a hit batter, a wild pitch, an RBI by Fernando Frias and a sac fly off the bat of Preston Lyon.

Alpine scored two in the sixth when Riley Smith doubled, Tim Henry singled and Matt Henrickson drove in Smith with a single. Henry scored on a 6-4 fielders choice by Scotty Hong. The Cowboys had cut the lead in half, 6-3.

Will Miller hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh for the Pupfish. Back-to-back doubles by Fernando Frias and Preston Lyon scored the last run for White Sands to reach the final score of 8-3

Things went much better for the Cowboys in the nightcap.

Brett Kennedy pitched a complete game 5 hit shutout. He had 10 ground ball putouts and only allowed 4 fly balls to the outfield. Kennedy didn't allow a runner into scoring position until the sixth inning. He didn't give up a walk, although he did hit a batter, and struck out 5.

The Cowboys scored in the bottom of the first. John Hotta singled and scored on a double by Casanova Donaldson. A grounder to the right side by Tyler Heck moved Donaldson to third where he scored on a sac fly by Austin Prott.

Alpine scored another run in the second on a double by Brett Kennedy and a sac fly by Casanova Donaldson.

In the third, Brian Millimen reached on an error by the second baseman and scored on a home run by Austin Prott. The score was now 5-0 Cowboys.

Alpine scored a single run in the fourth and scored their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brett Kennedy and John Hotta both walked, and advanced on a Casanova Donaldson ground out to first. Kennedy and Hotta scored on a double by Tyler Heck.

With the split of the double header the Cowboys record reached 13-5. They took 3 of 4 from the Pupfish and take on the Douglas Diablos for four games starting Friday at 7 PM.
