The Cowboys swept the four game series from the Santa Fe Fuego by winning 10-5 on Friday night. Josh Cruse got the win with 5 ⅔ strong innings in the starting role.

Alpine scored first to get out to an early lead on the Fuego. Tyler Heck started things off with a leadoff home run. To my recollection this is the first leadoff home run by the Cowboys this year. Casanova Donaldson drew a walk and moved to third as Austin Prott reached on an error by the second baseman. Donaldson scored on a passed ball and Prott took second. With two outs in the inning, Colby Gee singled to score Prott and the Cowboys were up 3-0.

The Cowboys scored again in the third when Austin Prott singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Riley Smith.

Santa Fe scored one in the bottom of the fifth when Chevas Numata singled and moved safely to third on a botched fielders choice putting runners at first and third with one out. After Joey LaCugna struck out, Jeremiah Steinert doubled to score Numata and put runners at second and third. Josh Cruse got Eric Kosel to strike out to end the threat.

Josh Cruse was pulled with two outs in the sixth after giving up a two run home run to Chevas Numata. Ryan Richardson came on in relief to get Aaron Carmen to fly out to right to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh the Cowboys scored twice on a double by Tyler Heck, a triple by Austin Prott and an RBI by Matt Henrickson that drove in Prott.

The Fuego scored one in the eighth on a walk, a single by Aaron Carmen that put runners at the corners and a ground ball to second by Joey LaCugna.

With a 7-5 lead going into the ninth the Cowboys could use an insurance run. They got more than that. Scotty Hong, on in relief, reached first on an error but was caught trying to steal second. Tyler Heck drew a six pitch walk. Casanova Donaldson singled to put runners at first and third with one out. Austin Prott, on a 2-1 pitch, launched a home run to clear the bases and give the Cowboys a 10-5 lead.

Ryan Rogers, the Cowboy closer, entered the game in the ninth. This was not a save situation with a five run lead but Rogers hadn’t pitched in the first three games of the series. Rogers struck out the first two Fuego hitters he faced before walking Nick Billinger. Ryan struck out Brice Cutspec to end the game.

Josh Cruse and five relievers scattered eight hits, struck out twelve and issued five walks. The Cowboys out scored the Fuego 36-16 in the series. Tyler Heck was 2 for 4 with a home run and three runs scored. Riley Smith went 2 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored.  Colby Gee  was 2 for 4 with an RBI but the batting hero of the evening was Austin Prott who went 3 for 5 with the home run and 4 RBIs. Prott was a double short of hitting for the cycle.

The Cowboys improved to 21-5 overall while the Fuego fell to 14-9 on the season. Alpine won its 9th game in a row. They haven’t lost since the second game of the double header against the White Sands Pupfish on the 29th of May.

The Douglas Diablos beat Roswell 5-3 last night to drop the Invaders to 17-7 on the year a full 3 games in back of the Cowboys for first place in the Southern Division of the Pecos League.

The Cowboys face Roswell for four games starting tomorrow, have a travel day on the 11th and then take on the Invaders again in Alpine. That series starts a 12 game homestand that runs from the 12th of June through the 22nd of June.
