Cowboy Win Streak Ends With 7-3 Invader Victory

W.D. Barr

The Roswell Invaders put an end to the Cowboy’s win streak at nine games last night with a 7-3 come from behind victory at Jack Bauman Park in Roswell, New Mexico.

The game started out well for Alpine. As is becoming the norm, The Cowboys scored three runs in the top of the first. Tyler Heck reached first on an error and Casanova Donaldson singled. Both Heck and Donaldson scored on a triple by Austin Prott, his second triple in two games. The two RBIs by Prott give him 30 for the year just one behind team leader Brian Millimen.

Pat Lemmo, the Cowboy starter, went six strong innings allowing just one run on four hits, walking two and striking out 1. Lemmo, who has been more dominate in strikeouts recently threw 91 pitches, 56 of them for strikes.

Ryan Richardson entered the game in the bottom of the seventh for the Cowboys in relief of Lemmo. He gave up four runs on two hits and a walk in his one third of an inning of work. The big blow was a triple by the Roswell pitcher, Josh Mooney that gave Roswell the lead. Mooney pitched a complete game five hitter giving up just two earned runs as he struck out ten Cowboys.

Travis Renwick finished the seventh in relief of Richardson with no further damage. David Gates started the eighth but lasted just one third of an inning. He gave up two earned runs on a walk and one hit. Two of the four relievers for the Cowboys had rough outings last night. Coach Stevens’ bullpen had done a good job during the winning streak. All of the blame does not rest on the arms of the bullpen. The Cowboy hitters were held in check by Josh Mooney. Five hits by this crew is not normal. They produced just three hits after the first inning. Chalk this one up to travel and facing better pitching.

The Cowboys fell to 21-6 on the year as the Invaders improved to 18-7, two games behind the Cowboys in the Southern Division of the Pecos League. These two teams meet again tonight in the second game of the four game series.
