Cowboys Drop Second Game In A Row To Roswell 8-2

W.D. Barr

One dictionary definition of uncharacteristic is out of the ordinary. That would describe perfectly the Cowboy performance last night in the 8-2 loss to the Roswell Invaders.

Noah Piard lasted just three innings. He gave up one earned run on one hit but walked five and struck out only one. Piard also threw a wild pitch. The Cowboys committed five errors. Each Cowboy infielder except Matt Henrickson had an error. Billy Crowe had two. The Cowboy hitters were held to five hits for the second game in a row. Only Tyler Heck, Austin Prott and Riley Smith had hits. The Cowboys did not record a hit after the fifth inning. Scotty Hong gave up five hits in the eighth when the Invaders scored five times to put the game away. He also hit two batters in his one inning of relief. These examples are atypical of the way the Cowboys have played during their first 28 games this year.

The Cowboys did score first, which is typical, but the way in which they scored was not. In the top of the second Riley Smith singled and stole second. Matt Henrickson walked. Riley Smith stole third and with Billy Crowe at the plate, Smith stole home. This was the first theft of home by the Cowboys this year.

Roswell countered with a run in the third off Noah Piard on a walk, a single, a wild pitch that put runners on second and third and a sac fly by Matt Streich. The Invaders scored two more in the fourth off of Andrew Shoemaker, on in relief of Piard, on a Jordan Johnson double with two outs.

Behind 3-1 in the fifth Tyler Heck singled and stole second. Casanova Donaldson struck out but Austin Prott doubled to drive in Heck. The score would remain 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth.

Things unwound for relief pitcher Scotty Hong in the eighth. The lead off man singled but was erased at second on an Andrew Arp 6-4 fielders choice. Hong then hit Kylin Sims with a pitch. The Invader pitcher, Ernie Zaragoza, followed with a two run double, his first RBIs of the year. Zaragoza reached third on a throwing error by Billy Crowe. Jordan Johnson doubled home Zaragoza. Sam Montgomery singled. Matt Streich singled home two more and the Invaders had scored five. Dimitri Papantonopoulos flew out to right to end the inning.

The Cowboys were unable to score in the top of the ninth and the Invaders had the 8-2 victory. It was not a good game for the Cowboys. Noah Piard was working from behind on almost every batter he faced. Andrew Shoemaker took the loss in relief of Piard when he gave up the two runs in the fourth. Scotty Hong, to be kind, was ineffective in his one inning. The Cowboys struck out 15 times on the night.

So the Cowboys fall to 21-7 and the Invaders climb to 19-7, just one game behind the Cowboys in the quest for first in the Southern Division. The teams play twice more in Roswell before making the trek to Alpine for four more games beginning Thursday the 12th of June.
