Cowboys Win A Wild One In Roswell 14-12

W.D. Barr

Last night's game in Roswell was a real barn burner. The two teams combined to score 26 runs on 32 hits, 19 walks and they committed 7 errors.

Not the way either coach would have liked but Coach Stevens and the Cowboys prevailed 14-12.

The Cowboys fell behind early. The Invaders scored six times in the first two innings. Alpine scored a run in the second and two more in the fourth but found themselves down 6-3 heading into the fifth.

It would be an understatement to say that the fifth inning was a productive one for the Cowboys. They sent twelve men to the plate and seven of them scored. Brian Millimen drew a lead off walk. Riley Smith clubbed an RBI double that scored Millimen and Scotty Hong doubled home Smith. Matt Henrickson tripled to drive in Hong and Corey Caswell singled to score Henrickson to give the Cowboys the 7-6 lead. Aaron Corwin hit into a 1-6 fielders choice. Tyler Heck walked and Casanova Donaldson singled. Austin Prott grounded into a 4-6 fielders choice to score Corwin and move Heck to third. After Heck scored on a wild pitch and Prott advanced to second, clean up hitter Brian Millimen singled to score Prott with the seventh run of the inning. The Cowboys had their first lead at 10-6.

The Invaders scored four times in the bottom of the sixth on two walks, a double and a single. Walks are a coach's nightmare. A ball in play can result in a putout but a free pass is indefensible. Of the 19 walks issued to batters by the two teams, 8 scored. With the four runs Roswell scored they tied the game at 10 all.

Roswell took back the lead in the bottom of the seventh scoring twice on a single, a walk, an intentional base on balls to the hot hitting Dimitri Papantonopoulos, another single and a sac fly by Andrew Arp to take a 12-10 lead.

Alpine scored two in the eighth. Matt Henrickson flew out to right field and Corey Caswell followed with a double. Tyler Heck doubled to score Pollacchi who was a pinch runner for Caswell. Casanova Donaldson singled to score Heck and the game was tied at 12.

The Cowboys scored two more runs in the top of the ninth. Brian Millimen led off the inning with a single and moved to third as Riley Smith reached on an error by the Invader shortstop. Matt Henrickson walked to load the bases. Billy Crowe, in as a replacement for Corey Caswell, walked to force in Millimen and Smith scored on a wild pitch. The Cowboys had the 14-12 lead but on this night no lead was safe.

Ryan Rogers shut down the Invader bats in the bottom of the ninth to get the win in a wild game that saw three lead changes.

Tyler Heck was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Casanova Donaldson went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Brian Millimen banged out three hits in his five at bats driving in one. Scotty Hong, playing left field in last night's game, was 2 for 5 with an RBI and three runs scored. Corey Caswell went 3 for 5 with two RBIs.

The Cowboys gained back a game on the Invaders in their race to first place in the Southern Division, climbing to 22-7 while Roswell fell to 19-8, two full games behind the Cowboys. One last game in Roswell and then a travel day before renewing the rivalry in Alpine on the 12th of June.
