Roswell Takes Series From Cowboys With 8-7 Victory
It was a catch up game all evening for the Cowboys. They led 3-2 after the top of the fourth, tied the game again at five apiece in the sixth and scored a run in the top of the ninth to even the score one final time.
Scotty Hong, who started in left field for the Cowboys, began the ninth in relief of Travis Renwick. Hong struck out the Invader lead off man, Matt Streich, but walked Dimitri Papantonopoulous. Mike Kerns then singled. After Hong struck out Ryan Retz for the second out, the hero of the game for Roswell, Arp, took control and came through with the walk off hit.
The Cowboys were inconsistent as they gathered twelve hits over the nine innings but left nine men on base. They went in order in the first, third and seventh. Brian Millimen led off the second with a double. Riley Smith sacrificed Millimen to third. With one out Scotty Hong lofted a fly ball to right for the second out. Coach Stevens tested the arm of the Invader right fielder, Jacob Campbell, by having Millimen tag up. Millimen was cut down at the plate on a very good throw by Campbell and the inning was over.
In the top of the fourth the Cowboys played outstanding offense. Tyler Heck got a lead off single and then Heck and Casanova Donaldson executed the hit and run to perfection putting runners on the corners with no outs. Austin Prott laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that scored Heck and when the third basemen made an error, Donaldson wound up at third and Prott at second. Brian Millimen grounded out to second to score Donaldson and move Prott to third. Riley Smith singled to plate Prott. The Cowboys had their first and only lead of the night.
With all the runs scored in the series, the Invaders outscored the Cowboys 35-27, and all the hits by the two teams, Roswell out hit Alpine 50-39, Ryan Retz hit the only home run of the series in the bottom of the fourth off of Anthony Figliolia that regained the lead for Roswell.
There have been spots in this series where I thought Coach Stevens was maybe a little too aggressive on the base paths or too conservative at the plate. I have been guilty of second guessing the coach but Lou Brock once said "(s)how me a guy who's afraid to look bad and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time". Keep on coaching coach and I'll try to stick to writing about the game.
This is the first series Alpine has lost this year. The loss leaves the Cowboys at 22-8, one game ahead of the 20-8 Invaders. After a travel day on Wednesday these two teams meet again in Alpine for four games starting on Thursday with a single game, one on Friday and a double header on Saturday.
